“Unfinished business”
Oba Akinsemoyin left so much unfinished business. I can’t wait to read the sequel to this book.

Review for: When the Lagoon Decides
“Powerful yet peotic writing”
The scenes are so vividly written they feel almost cinematic. From bustling markets to tense political gatherings, it’s easy to picture every moment. Alaka clearly has a deep understanding of the culture and period, and his powerful yet poetic writing truly make his story come alive. I do hope that book two is coming soon!!!

Review for: When the Lagoon Decides
“a deeply human story within a rich historical setting”
What makes this book so special is how it anchors a deeply human story within a rich historical setting. Lufaderin’s journey is compelling in its own right, but it’s the wider context (the trade, the politics, the shifting power) that elevates everything. I felt like I was learning constantly, without ever being taken out of the story.

Review for: When the Lagoon Decides
“Such a wonderful sense of scale”
The book manages to feel both intimate and expansive. Personal stories unfold against a backdrop of larger societal change, giving the narrative real depth and significance. I can’t recommend highly enough, and am so looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review for: When the Lagoon Decides
“Book of the year!”
I came into this book knowing (ashamedly) very little about the history and culture it explores, but came away feeling entertained, educated, and genuinely enriched. The world of Eko is brought to life with such clarity and depth that it feels completely immersive. It’s rare to find a novel that balances beautiful storytelling and learning so seamlessly.
